This map image shows the upper Russian River mainstem reaches surveyed by the Sonoma County Water Agency from July-September 2002 with the number of steelhead observations per mile (upper half of Figure 1 from SCWA, 2003). The Russian River in the Ukiah reach generally had higher numbers of steelhead closer to the tail water releases at Lake Mendocino, but sightings were much more frequent in the Canyon reach between Hopland and Cloverdale. See InfoLinks to learn more about study methods and results.

This map image shows the lower half of Figure 1 from SCWA (2003) showing the Russian River mainstem reaches from Hopland to below Healdsburg with the number of steelhead observations per mile. The Russian River in the Alexander Valley and Healdsburg reaches had very few steelhead observations. See InfoLinks to learn more about study methods and results.

Caption and photo from Figure 21 in the Upper Russian River Steelhead Distribution Study (SCWA, 2003): "Canyon Reach, Segment C4. A total of 113 steelhead were observed in this segment, primarily in cascade and riffle habitats. The fast-flowing cascade shown in the bottom photograph had 74 steelhead observations."

Caption and photo from Figure 23 in the Upper Russian River Steelhead Distribution Study (SCWA, 2003): "Canyon Reach, Segment C6. This reach was composed of 2% deep pool, 28% riffle, and 70% flatwater habitats. A total of 254 steelhead were observed primarily in riffle habitat. This photo shows a steelhead-bearing riffle with cobble and boulder substrate."

Caption and photo from Figure 24 in the Upper Russian River Steelhead Distribution Study (SCWA, 2003): "Canyon Reach, Segment C7. A total of 210 steelhead were observed in this segment. The photograph shows a riffle in the background and flatwater in the foreground."

Caption and photo from Figure 25 in the Upper Russian River Steelhead Distribution Study (SCWA, 2003): "Canyon Reach, Segment C8. A total of 106 steelhead were observed in this segment primarily in riffle habitat. The top photograph shows a broad shallow riffle in the background and an exposed gravel bar in the foreground. The bottom photograph shows flatwater habitat."

Caption and photo from Figure 26 in the Upper Russian River Steelhead Distribution Study (SCWA, 2003): "Figure 26: Canyon Reach, Segment C9. This segment is the downstream extent of relatively large steelhead observations. The segment contained 50% riffle and a total of 59 steelhead were observed primarily in this habitat type. Flatwater with riffle habitat in the far background are shown in both photographs."
