Click on image to enlarge (86K). This photo shows two 5-foot diameter rotary screw traps and one 8-foot rotary screw trap fishing below Mirabel dam. The cones rotate under power of the current and a spiraling wall within the cone captures scoops of incoming water. The cones are made of screen so that they pass water but gently move fish down the axis and into holding pends. The drums at the rear of the traps comprise a rotating wall to the holding pen and function to remove algae and waste from the pen.
This downstream view of the three rotary screw traps has the intake to one of the two fish ladders in the foreground. The traps are anchored to a tight cable strung across the river. This system allows adjustment of the traps according to the current.
This close-up view of the two 5-foot diameter rotary screw traps. The truss system at the fore of the aluminum raft allows for the traps to be raised by winch for adjustments or cessation of fishing.
