Habitat: Alexander Valley Russian River Embeddedness 1998 |
|
Caption: This chart shows the average level of embeddedness by fine sediment in pool tails for three strata in the Alexander Valley of the Russian River. The study classified and examined reaches above, within, and below the two areas subject to gravel skimming operations. The California Department of Fish and Game (1998) has set four categories for embeddedness: <25% = 1, 25-50% = 2, 50-75% = 3 and >75% = 4 and judged only category #1 as optimal for salmonid spawning. Embeddedness measured more than twice as high downstream of gravel skimming, whereas it was suitable upstream. Data published by the Sonoma County Water Agency. See InfoLinks for more information.
