Happy youngster holds up a whopping Trinity River adult steelhead in a photo likely from the 1980's. Pink on operculum and the square tail identify this fish as a steelhead as opposed to a Chinook salmon. Only hatchery steelhead with fin clips can be retained today due to protected status under the Endangered Species Act that now covers Klamath Basin wild steelhead.
