Comments by Dr. John Menke to Jim Kilgore, Klamath National Forest, 4/3/95Main Points 1. Riparian zone can provide ample forage for grazing under proper management and still meet fish needs.2. Proper soil moisture content at time of grazing is critical to maintaining bank stability.3. Browsing utilization on willows needs to be considered.4. Probably some need for restricted grazing to allow recovery.General Operating Plan (details need to be established)- Break riparian zone into manageable units (i.e., on one landowner's property)- When above soil moisture, willow conditions are appropriate, browse the subunit intensively for 5 days (?), then have total exclusion for 25 days (allow plant, root recovery and development)- This concept of short, intense grazing with long periods of rest & regrowth would be an alternative method to our proposed total exclusion policy and maybe would be more acceptable to the Ag community.Comments- Menke will follow this approach on his land. Bruce Walker is supposedly trying this approach on his land now, but don't know what is happening in the riparian zone on his land.- Supposedly the production from the land is able to increase 2-4x over standard practice.
