These surveys were conducted to identify important Atlantic salmon habitat including spawning and rearing areas. The majority of the survey data was collected using Trimble Pro and Pro-XL receivers and survey files were differentially corrected to provide 2-5 meter accuracy. Surveys for some reaches were collected during the 1980's and the attributes were overlaid onto a line created from a GPS-acquired centerline, or a single-line stream from MEGIS/USGS 1:24,000 hydrography data. The coverage includes information on habitat categories and areas, and an indication of spawning and rearing potential, as well as detailed attribute information concerning stream dimensions, substrates, vegetation, and other stream characteristics. Purpose: This dataset is designed to be used in a variety of management and planning activities including fry stocking, developing production estimates and habitat protection efforts. Native_Data_Set_Environment: Arc/Info Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: The database was audited for data entry errors through a series of reviews that checked for inconsistencies. Survey data was collected using a data library that limited errors in the field. Logical_Consistency_Report: Completeness_Report: This coverage contains habitat data for portions of the Dennys, Ducktap, East Machias, Kennebec, Machias, Penobscot, Pleasant, and Sheepscot River watersheds. The survey used sub-meter GPS receivers and other methods to map habitat breaks. There may be other tributaries in the watersheds that have not yet been surveyed and mapped. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: 2 - 5 meters (with differential correction) for Ducktrap, Machias, Pleasant, and most of the Dennys, East Machias, Kennebec, Penobscot and Sheepscot Rivers (see Process Description below for exceptions). In general PDOP values for the receivers were kept below 4.0 and Signal Noise Ratio was greater than 6.0, resulting in sub-meter accuracy. During some parts of the survey the PDOP mask was increased to values of greater than 4.0 due to dense forest cover and elevation masks. Base station files were acquired from the University of Maine Community Base Station. It is not possible to estimate the accuracy of the Narraguagus River, and parts of the Dennys, East Machias, Kennebec, Penobscot and Sheepscot surveys as those surveys fit attribute information collected in the field with only relative positional data onto a stream centerline. Process_Step: Process_Description: Three different processes were used to create subsets of the habitat data. The attribute "base" identifies which process was followed for each arc/line in this dataset. ***** (1) The first process (base = 'GPS'), and that which provides the most accurate depiction of the data, comes from river surveys using sub-meter accuracy GPS units to gather data in the field. Discrete habitat units were delineated on the basis of one or more physical characteristics that separated them from adjacent habitat types. Habitat surveys were conducted during low-flow periods. For convenience, surveys were performed from upstream to downstream. Once a habitat unit was defined, appropriate attribute data were measured and recorded for the unit. Trimble Pro-XL GPS receivers were used to record positional and attribute information. Where possible, a PDOP mask was set at 4.0 to generate sub-meter accuracy. Some areas of the survey have higher PDOP values due to dense vegetation or satellite problems. Base station data was acquired from the University of Maine's Community Base Station and from Maine Technical Source's Community Base Station. GPS files were differentially corrected using Pathfinder Office software and exported to Arc/Info generate files. Data created in this way include: the mainstem of the Dennys River surveyed in 1994; the Ducktrap River surveyed in 1996 and 1998; portions of the East Machias River surveyed in 1998, 1999 and 2000; portions of tributaries to the Kennebec River surveyed in 1999; the Machias River surveyed between 1994 and 1998; portions of tributaries to the Penobscot River surveyed in 1999; the Pleasant River surveyed in 1996 and 1998; and portions of the Sheepscot River surveyed in 1997 and 1998. ***** (2) The second process (base = 'GPS-Overlay') created datasets by overlaying historic salmon data on a GPS-acquired centerline. These historic surveys utilized standard transects (e.g., 200 and 600 feet) to measure and record habitat compostion. A centerline of the subject stream was created using a Trimble Pro or Pro-XL GPS receiver, often after the original survey, and the original survey data was overlaid on the centerline using ArcInfo's Dynamic Segmentation module. Data created in this way include: the Dennys River's Cathance Stream surveyed in 1986 and using a 1997 GPS-acquired centerline; portions of the East Machias surveyed in 1984; and the Narraguagus River surveyed between 1991 and 1993. ***** (3) The third process (base = 'Overlay') created datasets by using a similar transect method to the 'GPS-Overlay' method mentioned above. This process used field surveys that collected an abbreviated set of attribute information in 1998 and 1999, and then used Arc/Info's Dynamic Segmentation module to overlay the data onto a stream centerline. The stream centerlines came from the "streams" dataset created by the Maine Office of GIS and USGS, or were digitized with reference to the double-line streams of the "rivers" dataset also from MEGIS and USGS. Data created in this way include: the Dennys tributary, Venture Brook; East Machias tributaries, Barrows Stream and Palmer Brook; Kennebec tributary, Souadabscook Stream; Penobscot tributary, Felts Brook, and Sheepscot tributaries, Ben Brook, Choate Brook, Dyer River and Trout Brook. Attribute_Definition_Source: User computed Attribute_Domain_Values: Range_Domain: Range_Domain_Minimum: 0 Range_Domain_Maximum: 37 Attribute: Attribute_Label: Substrate Attribute_Definition: Algorithm based on observed relative proportions of 8 substrate categories (ledge:, large boulder: diameter>24", small boulder: 12" 50% Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: MODERATE Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: %ledge+%large boulder+%small boulder+%cobble < 50% Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: COARSE Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: %ledge+%large boulder+%small boulder+%cobble < 50% Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: UNCATEGORIZED Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: No classification possible due to insufficient data, most likely resulting from an Overlay survey (attribute base = 'Overlay') of less detail than a full GPS survey. Attribute: Attribute_Label: Canopy Attribute_Definition: Percentage of channel covered by over-story. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute_Domain_Values: Range_Domain: Range_Domain_Minimum: 0 Range_Domain_Maximum: 100 Attribute: Attribute_Label: Rootveg Attribute_Definition: Percentage of unit bottom covered by rooted vegetation. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute_Domain_Values: Range_Domain: Range_Domain_Minimum: 0 Range_Domain_Maximum: 95 Attribute: Attribute_Label: Attachveg Attribute_Definition: Percentage of unit substrate covered by attached vegetation. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute_Domain_Values: Range_Domain: Range_Domain_Minimum: 0 Range_Domain_Maximum: 100 Attribute: Attribute_Label: LocCode Attribute_Definition: Identification code for physical location of the habitat unit (sub-reach, reach, branch, sub-drainage, and drainage). Code is the concatenation of the branch name, upstream extent and downstream extent of the sub-reach boundaries as measured in kilometers (nearest 0.01 km) from the mouth of the branch. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute: Attribute_Label: Drainage Attribute_Definition: Drainage or watershed name. Based on a unique connection to the ocean with respect to other drainages. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute: Attribute_Label: SubDrain Attribute_Definition: Sub-drainage name. For these purposes, a sub-drainage is defined for the mainstem of the drainage and for tributaries that flow directly into the mainstem. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute: Attribute_Label: Reach Attribute_Definition: Reach name. Defined by a fixed upstream boundary name and downstream boundary name. Usually boundaries are convenient and easily identifiable landmarks. All reaches fall in one and only one Branch. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute: Attribute_Label: SubReach Attribute_Definition: Sub-Reach name. Defined by a fixed upstream boundary name and downstream boundary name. Boundaries define the extent of segments of fairly contiguous segments of habitat comprised of riffles and run habitat categories. All habitat units fall in one and only one sub-reach; all sub-reaches fall in one and only one Reach. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute: Attribute_Label: Altname Attribute_Definition: Alternative name of the sub-reach used as a convenient way to refer to the stream segment. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute: Attribute_Label: Landmark Attribute_Definition: Landmark name or description that helps to describe the geographic location of the habitat unit. Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Attribute: Attribute_Label: Comment Attribute_Definition: Some description of a survey event or feature of the habitat unit that is not covered elsewhere in the record Attribute_Definition_Source: User Defined Distribution_Information: Distributor: Contact_Information: Contact_Organization_Primary: Contact_Organization: US Fish and Wildlife Service - Gulf of Maine Coastal Program Contact_Person: Jed Wright Contact_Position: Biologist Contact_Address: Address_Type: mailing and physical address Address: 4R Fundy Rd.
