KRIS Russian River: Chart Page

Area Guerneville
Topic Fish: Estuary Beach Trawl Sample Totals 1992-93

Caption:  This Chart shows the various species caught in the Russian River estuary using an otter trawl net collected from August and November 1992 and March and April 1993. This net samples near the bottom and so catches more salt tolerant species because of the estuary's stratification. Three spine stickleback was the most abundant species with sand sole second, although it was only collected at one location in one sample. Starry flounder and English sole were the most common deep water fish in samples. Steelhead are generally not caught in trawl nets because they can swim fast enough to avoid them, but also the trawl in the Russian estuary is often in the salt wedge which steelhead would avoid. Data collected by Dr. Jennifer Nielsen. See InfoLinks for more detailed information about time and place of sampling and links to the Russian River Estuary Study 1992-1993 (Sonoma Co., 1994).
